Leica Minilux with Leica Summarit 40mm - the E02 error

The Leica Minilux with the Leica Summarit 40mm is one of the most popular analog compact cameras on the used market . Your legendary Summarit lens with its outstanding imaging performance certainly contributes to the "cult status" of this camera. Almost all automatic functions such as the distance setting by autofocus or the exposure with program automatic can be switched to manual setting and an aperture preselection with aperture priority, manual focus and exposure correction can be made. Advantages for the ambitious photographer that many other compact cameras do not have.

E02 error with Leica Minilux

Unfortunately, some Leica Minilux cameras nowadays show a "typical E02 error" that appears in the display after switching on the camera (error message E02 in the display). Even when the camera is switched off, the error message remains visible in the display for a while, often accompanied by "stuttering engine noises".

The problem is known with many similar cameras with a retractable lens (also from other manufacturers). The control and data transfer takes place via a cable harness (electronics) inside the camera. Over the decades of use and storage, the material becomes brittle, which is also bent and kinked under the load of the constant retraction and extension of the lens (e.g. when switching on and off or during focusing and zooming movements) and ultimately breaks or at least a loose contact shows. This essentially results in the E02 error on the Leica Minilux.

Leica no longer supplies spare parts and there are no qualified workshops for analog cameras. Basically, a Leica Minilux with an E02 error message would be a total write-off, but we have now found a way to repair the Leica Minilux with a non-original spare part (from China). The wiring harness is replaced here. This repair is "experimental" because in approx. 10% of all repair attempts it is not the wiring harness, but a deeper-lying electronic problem that cannot (no longer) be repaired.

If you have a defective Leica Minilux with an E02 error in the If you have a display, the camera is not yet "lost", the repair chance is around 90%, but if it is successful it is not cheap with repair costs of 380 EUR. If, contrary to expectations, your Leica Minilux cannot be successfully repaired, you will receive the camera back unrepaired for a flat fee of 38 EUR.

Repair of a Leica Minilux with an E02 error

Just having a spare part is not enough :-)

To fix the broken (or cracked) To replace the conductor strip in the camera, the Minilux has to be "disassembled" quite a bit. Here you can see on the left side the ladder strip to be replaced and the complexity of such a Leica Minilux repair. From decades of workshop experience, we (still) have the devices from the analog "old" days and also the mechanics to be able to continue repairing cameras .
