Leica M9 - My "Favorite Pieces" in December 2021

Whats in my bag

In search of the (for me) optimal camera, I have already made a few considerations on this website - thoughts on analogue  and digital photography, to  Leica M , Leica Q and Fuji XF100V .

In December In 2021, the "right camera equipment" for me will currently be as follows:

Leica SL2

My "workhorse" is the Leica SL2. In the field of (non-professional) studio photography, the Leica SL2 is my choice when it comes to technical requirements such as HSS high-speed photography with shorter exposure times than the standard synchronous time of the camera allows. Unfortunately, there are currently no studio flashes that allow HSS flash photography when using a Leica SL2. Profoto and Elinchrom offer flashes with corresponding controls for Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Fuji, but not for Leica. In order to use the possibilities of HSS high speed synchronization with a Leica SL2, the Leica SF60 flash units are required in connection with the Leica SF C1 control unit.

That's why I use it in the studio environment for portrait photography and especially for our product photography usually LED permanent light. For "mobile flash photography" I use two Leica SF60s, which are controlled via the Leica SF C1 remote control.

In this respect, the Using the Leica SL2 is certainly an excellent camera, but there is always a compromise in some areas of application. Is there one (1) camera that provides the perfect equipment for all requirements and wishes? For me it is first of all the Leica SL2, because with the adaptation it offers the possibility of using Leica M lenses. That makes the camera even more interesting for me because it gives me, as a dealer, the opportunity to visually (over) check all the Leica M lenses that we buy and sell quickly and easily in a "digital test environment".

So in this "working environment", the Leica SL2 is a good choice for me, a Sony Alpha would probably be the more sensible decision, as far as the price alone is concerned.

That's why I currently have the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm 2.0 ASPH. Price-consciously replaced by the Sigma 65mm 2.0 DG DN Contemporary, which costs a fraction of the Leica lens and at least "feels" in no way inferior to the Leica lens.  The decisive factor was the high imaging performance and the good macro area in the product photography, which we need for our online shop.

Leica M9

The range on fotohandel.de primarily includes the analog Leica M cameras and lenses. And so it makes sense to take photos yourself with an analog Leica camera. As explained in another blog post, however, the learning curve is too flat for me if I usually only get a result after weeks for the exposure of a film about the development in the laboratory. For me, the Leica M9 is currently the ideal "little camera for on the go", as its CCD sensor provides that wonderful Leica image look that we know from analog photography.

Leica Q2

Otherwise I like to use the Leica Q2 as a travel companion or when it comes to photographing my two-year-old granddaughter in play, in those fleeting moments when a reliable and fast autofocus is helpful.
